What is the difference between kendo and Kenjutsu?
Do they both use Katanas?
and when taught, is sparing practised? (with shinai (bamboo sword) and bogu (armor) of course)
To keep it short and simple:
Kendo is a sport competition against two opponents wearing bougu and using shinai. Kata is taught, but not with a real sword, only bokuto.
Kenjutsu is the art of the long sword and short sword. There are hundreds of individual styles of Kenjutsu and many include other weapons such as the naginata.
Kendo never uses a real katana while Kenjutsu is the preserved art of fighting with the katana. Sparing is not done in Kenjutsu, however there are many two man forms as well as drills.
@Fat Cobra: I was wanting to write something well wrote and poetic like you did… but I didn’t have the train of thought. Glad to know you got my back.
